ABOUT
"We Are Islands" was born with a simple question: when artists moved to Germany from non-Western countries, how were the experiences? Did the experience reshape their art practices? With a goal to answer this question, interviews were conducted with 11 artists and it was compiled into a publication, which was released in September, 2025. Up till now, more and more artists residing in Germany and beyond are envolved in this prolect and the project keeps develop on this website. This project is initiated and managed by an indepenent researcher Yohsuke Ishizuka.
The publication was designed by Macarius Eng, who introduced the idea of using LiSong Chinese type for English text. By doing so, it tells "the stories of the artists and their immigrant experiences: it captures the struggles of masking, the difficult attempt of having to present as something else."
